Conference Summary Sustainability and Challenges of the Belt and Road Initiative

Guangdong Hong Kong Macau Sustainable Development Conference was founded in 2002 by professional engineering bodies from the Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao. Since its inception, it has been successfully held 7 times and has the widespread recognition and support from the engineering industry, scientific community and the social community, to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong has made a positive contribution.

The 8th Sustainable Development Conference will be hosted by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the joint organisers of the conference are Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology and the Macau Institution of Engineers.

The Belt and Road Initiative is an important strategy for China’s external and internal development and the Pearl River Delta Bay Area was leading a major focus of future development and growth. The initiatives are obtaining peaceful cooperation; build on openness and tolerance and; to encourage mutual learning to achieve win-win outcomes. The theme “Sustainability and Challenges of the Belt and Road Initiative” jointly organised by the Environmental and Civil Division of HKIE 8th Sustainable Development Conference 2016 is on the opportunities and challenge of sustainable development under One belt one road and in the Pearl River Delta Bay Area. The conference serves to explore and identify the innovation, cooperation and green development under the Belt and Road Initiative and in Pearl River Delta Area and to discuss future development trends and the overall planning, opportunity and challenges of the development. The conference also focuses on enhancing public’s understanding and awareness of the initiative and the growth and development, potential as well as green living and green built environment in Pearl River Delta. As The Belt and Road Initiative on the beginning stage now, we will work closely with the Hong Kong Government to implement the details step by step. The Environment & Civil Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers wishes to elevate the countries’ major infrastructure along The Belt and Road Initiative, There are numerous of infrastructures under the building progress, include railway, highway, and harbours, which using with the standards of the developed countries.

Hong Kong engineer industry can provide the consulting service and involve in the construction operation management, meet the needs of high-end service industry, and promote the green development and lifestyle at the same time.

Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology wishes to improve the sources configuration, and build cooperation strategy to work more closely with Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau, to accelerate the development of Dawan district by the Belt and road Initiative. Improve the sustainable development of regional economics.

On the other side, to strength the strategy of the Belt and Road Initiative, with the construction of Dawan district, build a new openness structure [linkage of ocean and land, east and west bilateral openness] To Macau, Macau takes the responsibility to deepen the co-operation between China and the Portuguese Speaking Countries, which spread around in five continents. In order to support the diversification of the economy and the development of the adequate industrial sectors in Macau, the Mainland China also agrees to include the cooperation in convention and exhibition sector to strengthen as a supplementary in industrial cooperation between the two sides. Besides, China is fully support and coordinating with Macau to holding International conferences and events. AEM would like to associate with our Macau Government and private enterprise to build locally a Platform for cooperation between engineers in support of the social and economic development of China, Macau SAR and Portuguese-speaking countries.

The Belt and Road initiative along with over sixty countries and emerging economics, a complementarity relationship with Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. We are expecting the elites of three sides coordinating with each other, promote the development of the industry, satisfy with the needs of society, economic, environmental and sustainable development for preparation of sustainable development opportunity and challenge in the further.
